Hi I have a two & half year old black lab which has become gun shy after moving house a year ago even at the site of the gun he will go and hide in his bed.
has anybody got any suggestions on the best way to cure this broblem

Take him to 5 or 6 clay shoots and stand in the background making a real fuss of him and giving him a few treats, it will build his confidence. As time goes on get a little closer doing the same thing. Take your own gun on about the 4th time but dont shoot it untill about the 6th time and take somone with you if possible to hold him and make a fuss of him while you fire the gun.
This always worked for me and a few friends in the past.
You can bring things forward a bit if you have a good response earlier than this, but not to much as it may ruin everything you have already done. Be patient.

You mention that the dog hides at the sight of a gun?
therefore it is not the sound! it may be the association of the gun and the sound,you havent given enough info?
I wouldnt take it to a clay a shoot just yet!
If it is the sight picture when you have the gun ,try another inaminate object that the dog is confident with,such as a broom or walking stick etc that resembles a gun ,slowly reassure the dog whilst making gestures with this object as you would do with a gun,introduce gun oil and gun scent on the object over a period of time,also putting the object in and out of gunslip,when you are confident the dog is comfortable try using the the real thing ,when you have established the sight picture has been overcome ,introduce the dog to shot fire using a blank pistol at distance,before you take it to a clay shoot

I have a two year old springer. Before he was ready to be in troduced to shot at only a few months old I knew our neighbour would be having one of his infamous and ridiculously loud fireworks displays (lots of money, little taste!). In preparation I bought a CD off the internet which has loud bangs etc on it. The idea is that you play this to the dog initially at levels almost inaudible and repeat daily over several weeks gradually and slowly turning the volume up until the dog will happily chill out while you play very loud bangs right next to it. I never had a problem but I probably would have done had I not prepared. I would recommend this to you wholeheartedly. Do a search on Google for scary sounds for dogs and similar. Good luck.
