I am starting to train my 3 year old black labrador as a gundog. Her obedience is very good. I throw out dummies for her and she runs out very keen, but she picks them up and then drops them half way back to me. I have placed the dummies in her mouth and got her to hold them until i say dead and then she drops them in my hand. I sit on the ground to encourage her to come straight to me, but she drops the dummy half way and then comes straight to me minus dummy. Please can someone give me some advice.

I would suggest getting hold of a copy of "HUP! Training Flushing Spaniels The American Way" by James B Spencer. Available on Amazon. This has a very useful chapter on a gentle "force retrieving" method applicable to all breeds. No punishment or pain applied in the pre-force part of the method relevant to you. Essentially you train the dog to keep hold of the dummy and walk to heel, come to you etc by this method. It has helped me sort probs out with my own dummy possessive dog. Good luck!
