That Dreaded Shot
      #2638 - 13/02/2008 19:05

I know when I see a bird turn and fly directly away from me that I am probably going to miss it. I've tried everything but just don't have the technique for hitting them. I can get onto them, but do I need to give any lead at all if all I can see is their reer end? Any tips on this type of shot from anyone would be much appreciated as myself and 2 others are about to hit the pigeon next week and I don't want to be shown up .

This is quite a common one I am asked when coaching, but it really depends on how steeply the bird is climbing, however as a rule try this:-
Always bring the gun up from underneath the bird and just sit the bird on the barrels as if you were trying to shoot its feet off. As 60% of your shot flys above your barrels you should bring the bird down with out a problem. If the bird starts to fly left then aim the same but at his left foot. or the opposite for the right.
Good luck and let us know how you get on

You've probably heard this one before, but one of the largest factors in deciding whether or not you shoot well, or poorly on any given day is the confidence you have in your own shooting.
Try not to think about this type of shot too much, just bring up the gun and pull the trigger; provided you do not stop the gun, and you have mounted it correctly, they should start folding soon enough- but you must convince yourself that you are going to hit it first!
best of luck.

I haven't yet been faced with this shot, but next weekend I'll try the confidence vote as well. Thanks a lot for your help.
