privilege car insurance advert
      #3124 - 16/05/2008 23:05

I was watching tv last night when the new privilege car insurance advert came on. In it a load of toffs arriving by helicopter are having a jolly old time and meanwhile nigel havers is bemoaning how 'the poor old birds wont be able to fly away again' Im furious that a completely unrelated and seemingly uninformed company can show such biased negative propaganda to the general public. A link to watch the clip is below,

http://www.visit4info.com/advert/Privilege-The-Upper-Classes-Privilege-Insurance/56002

Please watch it, and if you are as incensed as i am write to privilege at

Privilege Car Insurance
3 Edridge Road
Croydon
Surrey
CR9 1AG

and ask them to revoke and apologise for the advert. We do not need this kind of media brainwashing the public into holding negative opinions about our sport.

Thanks for your support
Stacey

I have seen this advert as well and was concerned by its content. I would also say that the following link would be of use: http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/

I saw this advert and found it rather sterotypical, who i would have thought shooters would have been when i was an anti, shooting willy-nilly and having a jolly good old time, an of course them being "toffs". i will complain, i have nothing else i want to complain about XD

I put in a complaint to the ASA website. Hopefully if enough complaints are written something will be done

Your complaint:
I would like to complain about the way shooting is portrayed in this advert. The guns are typically toffs, as many uninformed people view them, and the accuracy of the shootigng scene portrayed is ridiculous, showing them all off to be a bunch of old toffs endlessly slaughtering the "poor" birds willy nilly. It is propaganda like this that feeds into the minds of the uninformed, and puts our sport at jeapordy. Shooting is nothing like this at all, it is a dignifyed sport that from what ive experienced is not cruel at all. The birds are raised for the purpose of this sport and these city folk need to keep their noses out of rural affairs, or at least portray them in a factual way. Members of the "Shooting Times and Country Magazine" would appreicate it, if this advert was taken off air and formal apology was written in its place. Many thanks

Melissa Phillips

I have today recieved a letter from the ASA, the important contents of which are quoted below:

Although I understand that you think the ad is misleading, we dont think that most people will interpret the ad as an acurate representation of the sport of shooting. Instead, we believe that most viewers will accept the activities shown as a non offensive, light hearted, stereotypical view of the upper classes in the context of an ad for an insurance company which claim to offer a 'privileged' service. Because of this, we dont think that there are sufficient grounds for an investigation at this time.

So there you have it, a Stereotypical, Light Hearted view of the Upper Classes shooting.

Best I sell all my guns and get back in my place further down the class ladder and take up cow dung collecting or wasp breeding instead.

It Stinks.

I got the same letter. Im sure if it was some pro hunting/shooting ad and some anti complained it would be taken down straight away :/
