Getting a new dog

Hi all
I am looking to get a cocker in the next few months and hope to train it for field work! I have a 3 year old lab that is not trained to gundog standard! has anyone got any advice or had problems with keeping working dogs and pet dogs together? i.e bad habits rubing off onto the working dog!
