If you are happy with the working ability, temperament and looks of the puppies parents and you only want him for working then a KC registration is irrelevent.
If you want to compete in KC licensed events such as Working Trials, I beleive you can register the pup on the Acitivities register however you won't be able to enter Field Trials or Gundog Working Tests unless he/she is registered on the Breed Register.
