I can't speak on behalf of ST but this was the Christmas 2005 Issue. My back copy has an article titled "Pricey Pests". It lists 30 creatures including the Golden Eagle, other raptors and mammal predators. The article claims that they have a significant impact on the rural economy. The Osprey is blamed for taking salmon. Herons, otters and badgers are listed. The worst pest according to the article is the sawbill duck which takes salmon smolts. I remember the rural affairs minister Jim Knight complaining about the article in the national press. It was reported adversely in several newspapers. The antis jumped on the band wagon. A bit of an own goal I think! |
