Lab problems

My lab is now being a pain, he will bring the dummy with no issues but when he gets back to me he does not want me to have it holding his head so low. Can anyone help.

Re: Lab problems

I would suggest sitting him down, giving him the dummy ie dont do a retrieve as such, then backing off only a yard or so. Call him to you and being careful not to stare him in the eyes put one hand gently under his chin and wait a few seconds. Give him your release command dead or whatever you use and gently take dummy out of his mouth. Wait a few seconds and repeat say twice more. Repeat daily. If he still manages to lower his head then do the same but without backing up the yard then if you get progress you can then move back a bit and build it up. Progress eventually into a short retrieve. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

Re: Lab problems

Many thanks for this info, i have noticed he does not do it so much with a ball, so i may build on this and leave dummies for now.

Re: Lab problems

I had similar problems with one of mine, he did exactly the same, I managed to overcome it by pretending to have something in my hand and hold it at waist level. The dogs curiosity meant he lifted his head and presented the dummy. I was worried he might spit the dummy, but he didn't, i also used to use the command "head up" and lots of praise
