22 LR Barrel Shortening

Hello everyone, I'm new here.
Just wanted anyones thoughts on shortening my 22 LR, CZ's barrel. It is currently very long and gets in the way of everything. I know the legal minimum is 12 inches but will this drastic shortening effect accuracy? Whats the optimum length? Also, what kind of price is fair for this kind of work?

I have seen and used 14" .22LR and no impact on accuracy as long as the cutting is done by a good gunsmith. You may loose a little in power but not enough to worry about.
Cut and threading should be under £100 but depends a lot on your gunsmith.

Hi there, welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy it and get stuck in!
I don't know if you have access to back issues of Shooting Times as our rifle expert Bruce Potts covered exactly this issue last August in two articles. The first was in the 16th and the second was in the 23rd of August issue.
In the second article he discussed the reduction of .22LR and .17HMR barrels on a Sako Quad. He found that reducing its barrel to 16in had little perceptible impact on velocity — in many cases it was quicker. As he wrote in the piece CZ and Anschutz already offer short 14in and 16in barrels in these smaller calibres which they would not do if there was a perceptible performance reduction. He did not go further than 16in, however.
Bruce's explanation of the physics of reducing the barrel was very comprehensible - if you can get hold of a copy of the magazine off friends who squirrel them away, then do so, or failing that let me know and I may be able to dig out the electronic file.

Hi Glandrover, had my cz cut down to 16" and see no difference at all in either accuracy or power. My local gunsmith cut and threaded the rifle for £40.

Get it done. I had the length of the mod taken off and re-threaded/crowned and it's better than before. just as accurate, no determinable loss of power and alot easier to wield. Cost me about £25 locally.

Is it necessary to get the rifle reproofed after shortening and threading for a sound moderator?

Some guns smiths say it is some say not.
If you are intending to sell it on in the furure then it will need proofing I believ.
