paying for a rough shoot

Hi all. Watching last nights program lie of the land, it seems that vermin of all sorts are rife amongst all types of farm. With the ammount of airgun shooters in the uk looking for shoots (check this forum!) would it not be beneficial to help increase the farmers profits a bit for them to offer shooting ground at a nominal fee? I for one have done a tremendous ammount of door knocking but still have one shooting ground of questionable worth! i am not against paying for decent vermin shoot and even offer my farmer free rabbit pie for the privelege. Surely we can work a bit more closely with the farming community and do each other a favour. Views are appreciated!!

Re: paying for a rough shoot

The problem lies (and I know this through my own experience) that shooting is very hard to find; be that rough/vermin/sporting rights.
Most farms that have a shoot attached or let out, very very rarely let anyone else shoot over the land. Likewise, most shoots on farm land tend to keep the vermin shooting "in house" as a perk for the beaters (I do exactly this on my shoot)

The issue is, if you were a farm owner, would you allow someone you dont know lose on your land, even with an air gun?

My advice is thus: find a local shoot and offer your services (NOT to shoot vermin, dont even mention it to start with) some shoot owners & keepers will jump at the chance of free help, some may not. This way, you get to know the keeper/owner, they get to know you, you learn A LOT and you will then find yourself being offered the odd bit of sport. For a few hours work, the rewards are worth it.

Dont be affraid to ask, but be prepared for both knock-backs and the worst jobs going! If your keen, reliable and honest, then doors will open.

Good Luck
Cpt.

Re: paying for a rough shoot

Yeah finding a suitable place to rough shoot is a real pain!
This is the first I've heard about paying to rough shoot somewhere though...
Luckily two lads I went to school with live on farms, so through a bit of negotiation with their dads/grandads we got full permission to shoot over the farms. We have actively tried to expand the areas which we shoot over by asking round the neighbouring farms, but as previously mentioned, these farms are 'as tight as a duck's arse' when it comes to rough shooters such as us.

I can only suggest that you do a bit of digging amongst family/friends, to see if they have an uncle/family member/etc who owns/works on a farm.

If you just want to do air rifle shooting then you shouldn't have a big problem as long as you seem polite, and not a little scally - it's when firearms become involved that they really start turning their noses up...
