Unusual Gundog?
      #2211 - 07/12/2007 15:48

Hmmm been thinking......

My Fiancee's new Border Collie Pup is showing some intresting traits such as a great nose for all things featherd, retrieving etc which leads me to wonder whether he might make an occasional rough shooting dog?

Has anyone ever shot over a Border Collie - is there anyone out there who could give any pointers as to his training?

I notice that in the states Border's are considered by some as good Duck shooting dogs!?

Just a thought.

Thanks
DB

starting pistol not too near the dog and work closer to him,but always leave on a good not and DONT do it till a year old another good way is bonfire night with dog biscuits as a treat so they associate it with being nice

HI , Working Border Collies are natural hunters, I have worked and bred collies for years, working them to sheep. and work and breed gun dogs , had most gun dog breeds over the years . I knew a Shepard who brought his Border Collie on a shoot beating and she worked as good as any of the other dogs flushing game. My collies don't like gun fire and if I happen to shoot anything around the farm they will sneak out the way , but I have never bothered to try to train them to work with the gun , I have never tried gradually introducing the sound of gun shots as you would when training a gun dog puppie breed. My best lurchers were collie X dogs they allways retieved to hand alive and all had good mouths except when it came to foxes if they cought one they killed it ( my sheep dogs are the same when it comes to foxes) good hunting
