Olympic Shooting Venue
      #2264 - 03/01/2008 10:28

Please all sign the below, this is VERY IMPORTANT:

Great Britain shooting team member, Nicola Heron, has started a petition regarding the siting of the 2012 Olympic shooting sports venue.

Nicola said: "Over £18 million approx (at the 2006 bid price) will be spent on building the 2012 Olympic shooting sports venue at Woolwich Barracks and then after the Olympics it will be pulled down again. This is not only a total waste of money and an immoral use of resources but more importantly it does not leave any lasting legacy for shooting sports in this country. Every year the Great Britain shooting teams work hard to bring home medals from competing in ISSF and FITASC disciplines world wide."

She added: "Surely it deserves a lasting legacy?"

I'd back that entirely. It's criminal that they're even contemplating spending upwards of £18million on a temporary facility. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games are, in my mind, being disingenuous when they say that the Royal Artillery Barracks was partially chosen as a site as it is an iconic location of great significance to shooters and shooting. It may be significant to the military, but not to shooters in the same way as, say, Bisley, just 30 miles away. Anything but a temporary site. It's farcical and is nothing short of a serious snub to one of our leading medal-winning sports (third in GB's overall Olympic tally after athletics and swimming, if I'm correct). Please sign the petition.

Just in case anybody missed it, there was a good piece in The Times the other day about the Olympic venue which gives a good account of the background to this row. The CPSA has taken the battle straight to MPs, so hopefully they can use their influence to persuade the London Organising Committee to relent.

There's also a good piece on the BBC news site which unfortunately I can't link to, but if you search under Olympic and Shooting on the site, it'll spit it out very quickly.

This story is ongoing, and I'm sure there'll be more to come. I understand a similar issue is being raised over the suitability of the equestrian facilities at Greenwich as well.
