1st thing, go and watch where they fly! No point in spending the Kings ransom on spinners, flappers and the like if the pigeons dont fly over you!

Then, when you have found your flightline, all you need is a cammo net and some garden canes, flask of tea, cartridges, gun, 1/2 dozen decoys etc. Get set up under the flightline, or just off it, set your decoys out infront of you, sit and wait! Any that you shoot then become extra decoys.

Or, you could buy spinners, flappers, kit bags, decoys and all the kit on offer from various retail outlets that tell you by having this spinner/flapper/twidler will make you the pigeon king.

Couple of pointers from me:

Sit and watch first, find their flight lines or sitty trees and target these.

Decoys, get a decent number, a hand full may work at times but I prefer to put out 25 or so to make a decent pattern. I use a mix of shell, full body and silosock decoys. If I can I will also put a couple of full body decoys up in a tree near by.

Movement, if you can add some movement to the pattern, I don’t use a flapper or whirly gig but to put some decoys on spring sticks to the move, the silosock decoys also move well in a bit of wind. I do use a bouncer though with a dead bird. I keep one fully feathered in the freezer ready to go on the bouncer when needed.

Pattern, position the pattern to bring the birds into range, I tend to use a horseshoe pattern most of the time. Face the majority of birds roughly into the wind but not all, it does not look natural.

I will also set a crow decoy or 3 of to one side of the main pattern.

Hide, don’t just concentrate on the front of the hide, make sure it has a decent back to it so movement through the netting is masked. I like to have a “V” in the front to shoot from.

If no action in 45mins to an hour, move.

HTH

Jerry

Pigeon shooting is one hell of a fun and productive way to spend an afternoon.... And I totally agree with what has been said so far! You would be amazed at how easy it is!

Definately spend a few hours watching the area to get yourself familiar with flightpaths and rough flock numbers etc.

We usualy use about 25 Pigeon decoy shells that we place about 25m into a freshly cut corn/maize field. This way they show up very well against the light background. We position ourselves in a treeline facing the decoys - but at the same time being ready to shoot into the trees around the hide - pigeons will often land in a tree and have a look first before landing.

Weather is a vital factor however, as I have found out many a time. Pigeons favour medium-strength wind and plenty of sun - I find that you don't get half as many coming to visit if the weather conditions are calm or overcast.

I recently purchased an Interarms 12g side by side, and on it's first outing using this form of decoying - I managed to get 6 decent sized pigeons in the space of about an hour.

I also found that you have to be ready to reload quickly - as in many cases once you have fired more pigeons come for a closer look.

Good hunting guys!
