still no shoot.......
      #2682 - 24/02/2008 22:12

Well i've nearly exhausted all my possible outlets for gaining some shooting (airgun pest control) I've knocked on doors, posted cards in windows, written to farms and anywhere i can think may have problems (golf courses etc) even offering free rabbit pie for letting me shoot, but still zip!
I'm respectable, responsible, insured and 41!!!
Where do i go from here???????
Manchester has a huge rat problem but i cant get near them as they are in the city centre, tried local allotments as well this week as they had rabbits crawling around the outer perimeter, left a card but again zip......
this is getting frustrating, i pest control for free so why are people paying a pest controller when i'll do the job just as well???
is there no rats or rabbits to hunt around rochdale?????
(i'll travel if i have to!!!)

My best advice is to search through your friends and family!

One of them is bound to have land somewhere, or know somebody who does.

I went to school with two lads who lived on farms, and a simple phone call from my dad to their dads started the ball rolling.

When you make contact however, highlight the fact that you are only using an air rifle, and that you only want to shoot at times when there are no workers on the farm, and only in certain 'safe' areas indicated by the landowner. He/she will be impressed by this, and thus will be more likely to say yes!

Once you have gained a 'foothold' - you can start NETWORKING.

I.e. 'Hi, I'm Robert Jones, I shoot on Mr Marshall's farm next door, I have noticed that you have a pigeon problem, would you like me to do a bit of pigeon shooting for you?'

Now we have the best part of a hundred acres to play with, and it all started with a simple phone call.

Areas such as alotments and golf courses are a non starter, due to the amount of people using the land - remember most people are terrified of guns.

Plenty of judgement is based on first impressions too, so don't use cards, dress smartly and be polite, be cheery and use your age to your advantage! Also a sense of humour might help too, as farmers are often very jovial characters!

The more they like the look of you, the more chance you have.

Best of luck mate!

Let me know how it goes!

I would add to the last post a visit to the local range or clay grounds. in both sports you will find plenty of people with access to land. A little bit of chat over a coffee can work wonders.

Let it be known what you are looking for and don't expect an instant response. Persevere though and you may strike gold. I have two farms to shoot over but often struggle to give them the time needed because of work commitments. I now have a mate visit when i am too busy.

Look for an old fart with a knackered side by side at the local clay shoot. I'll bet you a tenner that he doesn't pay for his shooting. Spark up a conversation and see where it leads. Good luck.
