Shooting + Epilepsy
      #2685 - 25/02/2008 14:53

Hello there,

I am a 16 year old currently learning to shoot. I have shot my boyfriends 410 and 12 bore under supervision of his father, and have a .22 air rifle of my own. Now i am still very new to shooting and am not interested in getting a license for either firearms or shotguns until im 18. But the sad thing is, i have epilepsy and it is quite bad at the minute (for me anyway) with me having 3 sometimes 4 fits per month. What id like to know is, would having epilepsy stop me from obtaining a gun license? (for either firearms or shotguns)Any info on the laws regarding guns and epilpsy would be very much appreicated, thankyou!

-Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Although we are uncertain as to the exact legal issues surrounding this, we believe your epilepsy should cause no problem to you gaining a licence.

This, of course, is something which you should check with your relevant doctor, who may be required to 'sign off' in the event of you obtaining a licence (as with a driver's licence).

However, your best course of action is to contact the BASC, who should be able to provide you with the full information about this.

BASC: 01244 573 010
Email: firearms@basc.org.uk

Hope this helps,

Barny

Thanks very much for the link, ill contact basc and see what they say, Hope i will be able to get a license, it would be nice certainly to have the "freedom" to shoot bigger things sfaly if you know what i mean, but i can also understand that it would be dangerous if i was to have a fit while out shooting, least i get about a minutes warning though-enough time to unload the gun, so well see what basc says.

Hi,

I would imagine that would be fine, as long as you are out with other people - especially if they are made aware prior to heading out.

As you are only 16 I would suggest you still join BASC, their junior membership is only £20 per year and this will allow you to make full use of their services and will also mean you have full insurance cover whilst taking part in shooting activity.

A very good organisation who have helped me a few times over the years.

A guy at my club had his FAC revoked because of epilepsy. They said there was an issue over "possession" of his firearms in the event of a fit. Sad case
