I have been shooting for years with an air rifle but now want to move on to rimfire weapons. Can anyone give me any advice on a starter gun to go for, .17 vs .22 and any other handy suggestions? Gun will be mainly used for vermin; rabbits in the main.

Hi Padge,
As you can see, you do get lots of views but no replies!
As for your question, there are a number of different things to consider before even thinking about what gun to get. It's already been covered in other topics, but to put it simply:
1.Have you got grounds that you shoot over already? If not, you wont get a Firearms Licence.
2. Have you had any experience of using a firearm (including a shotgun)? If not, you wont get a Firearms Licence.
If the answer to either of the above is "No", you have 2 options:
1. Join a rifle club, get some experience and apply when you have been a member for 6 months. However, I dont know if you would have a restriction put on your licence saying you can only use your firearm at the club / range
2. Join a clay club, get some experience with a shotgun, visit one of the game fairs and do your BASC Safe Shot badge, then apply for a shotgun licence. Wait a year and apply for your FAC
Whatever happens, your going to need some land that the police say is suitable for whatever rifle you apply for - your not going to get a .308 on 1/2 acre of ground in Lambeth for instance! (you wont get a .22 on 1/2 acre anyway)
The Police will not hand out FAC's like sweets. In the 1st instance, I would always suggest you phone your local force's Firearms Office and ask their advice. I would also spend £60 and join BASC, as their Firearms Dept is a great source of help and advice.
Then you can start flicking through the pages of Guns and Gunning!

Thanks for the advice. Land I have in plenty but it's the experience that is lacking. Long time ago with converted Lee Enfield's in the ACF and shotgun via a 410 shooting rooks. Your suggestion re the local firearms officer is excellent so I'm going to follow that one first, then the BASC. There's no rush as until the CSA leave me alone, finance is in short supply!!
