Am a 63 year old male and have taken up clay pigeon shooting as a hobby. Was a reasonable shot with a rifle in times gone by but have no idea what I need to purchase to get started. Have a budget around £1000 and have been told a need an 'up and over' for clays. :confused:
Expect to take some 4 or 5 lessons and reside in East Kent.

I think you probably mean an over under gun. This means that the you have two barrels mounted vertically on top of each other.
As opposed to a side by side, which is two barrels horizonally mounted next to each other. Or a semi automatic, which is a single barrel that has the ability to eject the first cartridge once used and automatically feed the next cartridge into the breech.
Which is probably good advice although lots of people use semi autos to great success. Plus semi autos tend to have very low recoil.
You best bet is probably to go to a good gun shop and ask to try the fit on a fews guns and see what fits you the best. You should also condsider a second hand gun as if they have been looked after that are probably as good as new. In that budget you would probably be looking at a Beretta or Browning.

If you have never done it before at the age of 63 then as a coach I would advise you try a Beretta Urika 2 semi-auto with 28gram cartridges. You can buy a perfect second hand one for around £700. They are very good guns. They are multi-choke and have an ajustable stock via shims on and in the stock. They have no recoil with 24gram cartridges and very,very little with 28grams but will take the 3 inch magnums for high goose shooting if you need to. I use one for coaching and the more mature first time shooters do prefer it to the over and under.
Pop into a gun shop and ask if you can try one.Get the 28 inch barrels as any more will be too much for you on an semi-auto.
If you have a shooting ground with a gun shop on site near you that will be the best place to go.
