Hi all,i had my 1st go at clays on wednesday which i enjoyed, but after i felt really sore for the rest of wednesday and thursday. Is this the norm for a 1st time shooter or would it be down to gun fit as i used 2 different borrowed guns,a 28" u/o and a skeet gun,i felt the skeet gun was a little to short in the stock for me and the other gun felt alot better.I hope you can give me some advice as i really enjoyed my shoot but if i keep ending up in pain then i may have to think again about taking up shooting.

Ha! hello Dennis, yes thats perfectly normal for the first time and as you say you will get recoil off a gun that is to short and often a kick in the face once or twice. Stick to the gun with the longer stock until you want to buy your own and use 24g cartridges as well they will make a lot of difference. Try to ware some padding on the shoulder if possible, a thick jumper or something like that will help. If you can, have a go with a semi auto, they have less recoil.
As a coach I use only 24g Hull intercomps when teaching because they have the lowest recoil on the market and I never get a complaint about recoil, so give them a go if you can.

Yes, they do work but are a little clumsy and you have to change it every time you use someone elses gun, but it`s fine while you make up your mind if you want to do it or not. Ha! a waste of money though if you don`t. If you do decide to give it a go then keep looking in as many shops as you can until you find a gun that fits. You may find one that has been extended for someone else or has a very large butt pad. They are out there, so keep looking. I would however advise a lesson with a good coach, he will help you hold and mount the gun better so you have less recoil and can advise you on anything else.
