Im looking at getting myself a gundog to train up, it will be my first one (owned plenty of dogs before!). Im not sure what to go for? The wife is not keen on spaniels and I'm keen for a lab but wondered what my options are? I like the look of brittany's but I'm after something that is easy to train and not to big as only have a small cottage. Any ideas? Cheers Scott

Hi Scott, The Labrador retriever is the most common breed within the Gundog section, that should tell you something? If you have little or no experience regarding gundog training, contact a local trainer in your area to arrange a few lessons, this will be invaluable to guide you through the early stages with your intended new dog. Choose a line from credited working stock. best of luck Robert

Hi I think the most important question to ask yourself is "what sort of shooting will I be using it for ?" Labs make great peg dogs for driven game and great for wildfowling. Spaniels are unbeatable for hunting up cover and can be used as peg dogs and taken fowling. Driven + Fowling = lab. Roughshooting + beating + abit of driven and a bit of fowling = spaniel. The alternative would be an HPR such as German Pointer but there is less support and fewer experts around to help you with the training. Probably not for beginners. Hope this helps.

I agree with Clarkey. Think about the type of shooting that you'll be doing first, then match the dog to it.
When it comes to training your dog, if yo're inexperienced then i think it would pay off to get expert advice and help. Your dog will be with you for many years, and unless you are rich enough to have a kennel full, then he/she will have to be up for the job.
Steve kimberley in Devon offers 1-2-1 training and some superb residential courses. Find him at http://kimberleygundogs.com/
Best of luck with your new dog... and if you do try Steve please say "hi" from me, Charlie, and Digit!
