Which Rifle?
      #3830 - 04/10/2008 20:10

Hi all...

I am looking for a rifle to use for general pest control, and small game shooting... Mainly rabbit, moorhen, partridge and pigeon...

I was thinking about a Rimfire, as I have been told by a few people that these are reasonably powerful, and generally reliable..

I currently use a .22 Air Rifle (Forgot what make), but wanted to upgrade to something of my own (Not my Boss's rifle)...

I like the style of the 'modern design' rifles, but will quite happily consider traditional wooden stock models...

Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in Advance,

Ben Pascoe

Hi
if you are looking for a rim fire you have 2 main choices either a .22 or a .17hmr both of which i have owned both of which are good calibers the 22 is much quiter rifle ( when you use sub-sonic ammo ) but has a larger arc of trelectory than the 17 and has been in the uk for years and the ammo is quite cheap the 17 is the new kid on the block and is much noiser but is much flater in flight ( mine flies flat out to about 130 yrds ) and causes a lot more dammage to the meat of your quarry than a 22 but i do think the 17 is much more accurate the biggest thing i do think you have over looked tho is the shooting of moorhens as they will be sat on water and shooting on water is a big no no because of ricoshay (yeah i cant spell) just dont do it so in summury if you are shooting at crows at 120yrds go for the .17hmr if your shooting rabbits at 50yrds for the pot get a .22 and if your shooting moorhens go home !!!!!!! good luck and happy shooting
