    Scotland's railway gun ban

Did anyone see the story highlighted in the Scottish media a few days ago about Scotrail's ban on passengers carrying sporting guns? What are the idiots trying to do - ruin Scotland's rural economy?

Be thankful you're not traveling to, through, New York City.

    Yes, absolutely.
    .
People in SNP have friends in the unions. The unions propose changes to the conditions of carriage which are "politically useful". Sporting shooting dies in Scotland and thousands of jobs are lost. Then the SNP can blame the landowners (read: "effing Tories") for the redundancies they've made and get elected for another 5 years to "sort it all out" after which they'll go after anyone over the age of 35, who's too white or English, or who owns more than the permitted number of shirts... Repeat ad nauseam.

I have a degree in cynicism from the University of Life, and even I can't keep up with this kind of crap...
Freedom is having the right to offend and be offended; politeness is temporarily eschewing that right in respect of others; maturity is understanding the compromise and applying it.

In all honesty, I would have some sympathy for the idea of an independent Scotland if it meant we could have a sensible firearms act and a nation that did not kow-tow to the USA, Brussels or London. and had respect for people who choose to live by countryside standards. But all the SNP seem to want is a far-left Peoples' Republic of Scotland beholden to Brussels rather than Westminster, and with the countryside dictated to by city dwellers. No, thanks very much! I shouldn't bring politics into this forum, and for that I apologise...........

A bit of good news I heard is that the chief executive of one of Scotland’s rail services said that it welcomes licensed firearms on its trains. In response to ScotRail’s decision to ban all firearms on its trains, Rupert Soames used social media to say that guns can be taken on The Caledonian Sleeper. This is the overnight train service running between Scotland and London. I hope this is still the case.

    Whilst we're on the subject:

''Lines from Euston - by one who is not going'' by A. M. Harbord

Stranger with the pile of luggage,
    proudly labelled for Portree,
How I wish this night of August,
I were you and you were me!

Think of all that lies before you,
when the train goes sliding forth,
And the lines athwart the sunset,
lead you swiftly to the North.

    Think of breakfast at Kingussie,
    think of high Drumochter Pass,
    Think of highland breezes singing,
through the bracken and the grass.

    Scabious blue and yellow daisy,
    tender fern beside the train,
    Rowdy Tummel falling, brawling,
seen and lost and glimpsed again.

You will pass my golden roadway,
of the days of long ago,
    Will you realise the magic,
of the names I used to know.

    Clachnaharry, Achnashellash,
    Achnasheen and Duirinish,
    Ev'ry moor alive with coveys,
    every pool alive with fish

    Every well remembered vista,
    more exciting by the mile,
Till the wheeling gulls are screaming
round the engine at the Kyle.

Think of cloud on Bheinn na Cailleach,
    jagged Cullins soaring high,
Scent the peat and all the glamour
of the misty Isle of Skye.

Rods and gun case in the carriage,
    wise retriever in the van,
Go, and good luck travel with you,
Wish I'd half your luck, my man.

Thanks, Tideflight - I've made a copy of that poem. Skye is one of my favourite places. I have a holiday there every year.

As you know it's band, as it is on all railways, if caught that's your FAC revoked with no chance of ever getting it back and a prison sentence. With all the antis it would be wise keep advised legal.

You're very welcome, Mike. I find it to be a deeply evocative poem and it almost brings a tear to my eyes. I'm afraid that I identify rather more with the observer than with the lucky traveller and, yes, I would gladly swap places! Like you, I've had some wonderful times on Skye. I once stayed up a valley near Uig and it was a paradise of a place.
