    Re: Wildfowling experience

I have just joined and been accepted (verbally) this club http://www.bigwibb.net/slwc/ I went to a clay shoot a couple of weeks ago and they seem a good group of chaps. I have been promised a couple of trips out and also I met someone at the clay shoot who is in the club that lives within 20 miles of me who said I could tag on with him sometimes which is very good. I have been thinking about it for a while and have finally paid my money.
So if you are thinking of doing it get it done, they say the experience is fantastic and I am looking forward to it. Roll on September.
I am not looking for big bags just a good experience to say YES I have done it.
Oh and by the way I am 1 hour and 50 minutes drive away from the coastal marshes so there wont be many that can beat that drive.

hmm i watched a wildfowling demonstration at royal cornwall a couple of weeks ago. I was abit dissapointed tbh. Aprt from one of the dogs which was impressive to watch, the other was a novice that just took the piss and got into a fight with a member of the audiences boxer which was a highlight. The guy just seemed on a self esteem mission, woudnt shut up about how hardcore wildfowling was and how difficult it was ect ect. Quite offputting for a beginer and made it seem abit dreary really.

    Re: Wildfowling experience

Jedpea; I saw the same demo at The Great Yorkshire show this week. I must say it grated on me somewhat when the Cornish Countryman said "hands up if there is any Wildfowlers here? " Then "Ah I thought not" and then when on to say how hard it it is to overcome the elements and that nobody wants to get out of their warm bed and go fowling. At the end of his demonstration he said "so go on give it a go".

I've been rough shooting for 30 years now, and all that time I've had it in the back of my mind that I'd love to give fowling a try. In the old books I've read, fowlers just wandered out onto the foreshore and shot, I love the idea of that sort of freedom. But the truth is it seems to me to be almost impossible to break into this sport unless you know people already in a club who will let you tag along. Thats why there weren't any wildfowlers at The Yorkshire show and thats why it's unlikely I'll ever a get a look in unless I go on a guided shooting holiday.

Or am I wrong? Is there anywhere in the UK where a licenced gun owner can turn up before dawn and try his hand without being a club member?

I was going to edit my last post and say thats why I joined a club because a few day permits is as expensive or nearly in some cases as joining a club.

Agreed, the permit scheme is a way in and obviously so is joining a club. Anywhere where you can just turn up and shoot, just out of interest? as a right?

    Whats the situation in Scotland?

Gloucestershire Wildfowlers are now running a Try Wildfowling Scheme. £25 for a guided flight seems reasonable to me

    Re: Wildfowling experience

I think the problem with clubs running day permit schemes is that you get people coming and 'shooting up' your marsh, i am a member of a relitivly small club, there are 100+ members but only 20 of us that regularly go. A few of us would go out one morning after some geese, if they are too high they get left alone till the following morning...they might be lower as they didnt get shot at. If you get the 'day tickets' coming on, all that will happen is that people want their moneys worth and dont care if they spoil the marsh as they wont be back for a while, so the 'i'll have a go' mentality come into play and everything gets blasted at. Spoils it for the club members for a while! NO THANKYOU DAY PERMITS! Trust me ive seen it happen.
